Are You Looking for Tinnitus Treatment in Minnesota?

The NeuroMed Protocol™ is a fundamentally new approach to treating tinnitus.

Why is a new approach needed? Because traditional approaches are failing too many patients. Around 50% of people do not achieve meaningful improvement with standard treatments — and here’s why:

1️⃣  Habituation strategies are poorly suited for severe tinnitus. These are the treatments that try to help you “get used to” the sound. But when tinnitus spikes, fluctuates, or reacts to sound, habituation strategies become ineffective — no matter how hard you try.

2️⃣  Single-modality treatments are too narrow in focus. Severe tinnitus is a complex brain disorder involving multiple brain regions. No single treatment can address them all, which is why a coordinated, multimodal rehabilitation approach is needed.

Our program is different — it’s a medical approach.

The NeuroMed Protocol™ is a structured 20-week medical rehabilitation program for complex tinnitus, delivered entirely by telehealth. Our focus is on treating the underlying neurological forces that drive tinnitus through coordinated medical intervention and rehabilitation — not just helping you cope with the symptoms.

What kind of results can patients expect? Approximately 90% of patients who complete the program achieve clinically meaningful improvement on validated tinnitus outcome measures.

Where is NeuroMed available in Minnesota? We treat patients statewide via telehealth, making specialized tinnitus care accessible from anywhere in Minnesota.

Are you a good candidate for our program? The best way to tell is by taking the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™.

We Are Minnesota's Leading Tinnitus Clinic

Want tinnitus relief? Here’s why the assessment comes first.

Nearly every tinnitus treatment available relies on habituation — training the brain to ignore the sound. Sound therapy, TRT, CBT, hearing aids, tongue stimulation devices — the methods are different, but the strategy is the same.

eliminate the distractions

But severe tinnitus isn’t something your brain can “just ignore”.

Complex, bothersome tinnitus is often driven by brain sensitization and neurological instability — and this makes habituation nearly impossible.

This is why the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™ is so important. It identifies the neurological patterns that drive tinnitus, helping us determine which treatment options are the best fit for you.

Looking for effective treatment? Start with the assessment.

Why Your Brain Keeps Turning Up the Volume

Three neurological forces that keep tinnitus loud and reactive.

1️⃣  Brain Sensitization: Inflammation and other biological stressors can make the brain’s sensory systems hypersensitive, causing the tinnitus signal to become amplified and reactive.

2️⃣  Sensory Processing Dysfunction: Changes in neurotransmitters and neural signaling disrupt the brain’s normal ability to filter sound, allowing tinnitus to become louder, more intrusive, and more persistent.

3️⃣  Brain Network Activation: Once tinnitus becomes persistent, it can recruit multiple brain networks involved in attention, threat detection, emotion, and self-awareness. This reinforces tinnitus as an important signal, keeping it at the forefront of your awareness.

Standard tinnitus approaches can’t address this complexity. Severe tinnitus is a neurological problem and it requires a medical approach.

The Science Behind The Test

Built on decades of research — Trusted by 33,000+ people with complex tinnitus

The Tinnitus Severity Assessment™ was developed by Hamid Djalilian, MD, a neurotologist specializing in tinnitus.

A key discovery from his research is that sensory processing dysfunction and neurological sensitization play an important role in keeping tinnitus loud, reactive, and difficult to ignore.

So unlike traditional tests that primarily measure emotional impact (distress), the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™ evaluates the functional and neurological patterns that actually drive loud, intrusive ringing.

The result is a more complete evaluation that has helped over 33,000 people like you to better understand what’s driving their tinnitus and make more informed treatment decisions.

Meet Hamid Djalilian, MD, Otology & Neurotology

Creator of the NeuroMed Tinnitus Rehabilitation Program and Tinnitus Severity Assessment™

Dr. Hamid Djalilian – Director of Otology, UC Irvine

Dr. Djalilian is an internationally recognized expert with more than 25 years of experience in the treatment of tinnitus and balance disorders and is currently the Chief Medical Advisor at NeuroMed Tinnitus Clinic.

Renowned for groundbreaking research and clinical protocols for tinnitus, Dr. Djalilian led his team at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) to a fundamental discovery:

Severe tinnitus is fundamentally a neurological problem, not just an ear problem.

This discovery led to the development of a new protocol for the treatment of tinnitus, validated by formal clinical trials at UCI. By developing this treatment, patients who had been brushed off by other medical experts were finally finding relief.

Based on this research, Dr. Djalilian and his team developed the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™ to reveal the impact and origin of loud, bothersome tinnitus, allowing patients to have clarity about what treatment is best suited to their paticular pattern.

Nathan Patel
"I knew whoever made this actually understands."

“This isn’t just about tinnitus, it’s about how it affects my whole life. That part caught me off guard. It asked about control, about unpredictability, about how much of my brain this thing hijacks. That’s when I knew whoever made this actually understands.”

Nathan P.
Woman with tinnitus
"Halfway through I was like, 'wait, this actually gets it'"

“I almost skipped it because I thought it would be another pointless quiz. But halfway through I was like, ‘wait, this actually gets it’. It picked up on patterns I hadn’t even noticed about my tinnitus.”

Connor O'Brien
“I felt like someone had finally mapped out what I’ve been trying to explain to doctors for years.”

“I didn’t even know what I was looking for when I started the test. But by the end, I felt like someone had finally mapped out what I’ve been trying to explain to doctors for years. It gave structure to something that’s felt chaotic. That alone made me feel more in control.”

Connor O.

“For the first time, I actually have language for what I’ve been trying to describe.”

“I’ve seen five doctors and none of them asked the kinds of questions this test did. It connected dots between my anxiety, my sound sensitivity, and this constant feeling of being overwhelmed. It made me feel like I’m not crazy. For the first time, I actually have language for what I’ve been trying to describe.”

NeuroMed Tinnitus Treatment FAQs

Yes. We are a medical clinic. Your responses are treated with the same level of privacy and confidentiality you would expect from any healthcare provider.

NeuroMed is a LegitScript-certified healthcare organization, and all patient information is handled using secure, healthcare-compliant systems designed to protect your privacy.

We never sell or share your information with third parties. Your assessment responses are used solely to help us better understand your symptoms and determine whether our program may be a good fit for your needs.

All information is managed according to HIPAA best practices, so you can complete the assessment knowing your information is being handled responsibly and securely.

You’ll receive your results immediately after completing the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™.

The assessment helps identify factors that may be contributing to tinnitus severity, including:

• Overall tinnitus severity
• Sound sensitivity and reactivity
• Symptom instability and fluctuations
• Somatic and sensory influences

Depending on your results, you may also be invited to schedule a complimentary clinical review call with our team. During that call, we’ll discuss your symptoms, answer your questions, and help you better understand what may be driving your tinnitus.

There is no obligation to move forward with treatment. Many people take the assessment simply to gain a clearer understanding of their tinnitus and learn about the options available to them.

No. Things are finally changing in tinnitus care as we learn more about the brain and what is happening.

For decades, tinnitus care was largely limited to reassurance, masking strategies, and the advice to simply adjust. Most physicians had little else to offer, and many still don’t.

What has changed is our understanding of the neurological processes that can drive tinnitus to become loud, intrusive, reactive, and disabling. Research over the last decade has significantly expanded our understanding of these mechanisms, but it takes time for new discoveries to become widely adopted throughout medicine.

There is currently no universal cure for tinnitus. However, many patients can still experience meaningful reductions in severity, reactivity, and day-to-day distress through a structured and individualized treatment approach.

Yes, even after years of suffering, improvement is still possible.

Many of the patients who come to us have been struggling for years, sometimes decades. They have tried multiple treatments, seen multiple specialists, and been told repeatedly that nothing more can be done.

Patients regularly experience meaningful improvements in:

• Tinnitus loudness and severity
• Sound sensitivity and reactivity
• Sleep disruption
• Emotional distress and anxiety
• Overall day-to-day intrusiveness

Improvement is rarely immediate and rarely linear, but the nervous system retains the capacity to stabilize and adapt, even after prolonged suffering. That capacity is what our program is designed to support.

NeuroMed is a structured 20-week telehealth rehabilitation program for people with complex, treatment-resistant tinnitus and related neurological conditions.

The program combines:

• Medical management and prescription therapy
• Customized sound therapy
• Tinnitus-specific cognitive behavioral strategies
• Sleep optimization
• Lifestyle and dietary coaching
• Ongoing clinical support

Patients work with licensed clinical providers through 15+ telehealth visits, receiving individualized recommendations based on their specific symptoms, triggers, and treatment goals.

The goal is not simply to mask tinnitus. It is to identify and address the neurological factors that may be contributing to tinnitus becoming:

• Loud
• Reactive
• Unstable
• Difficult to ignore

While no treatment works for everyone, approximately 85-90% of patients who complete the program report meaningful improvement in their tinnitus severity, quality of life, or both.

Most tinnitus programs are built around a single intervention, such as:

• Sound therapy
• Hearing aids or masking devices
• Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
• Supplements

While these approaches can help certain patients, they often address only one piece of the problem.

NeuroMed’s approach is built on a different premise: that loud, bothersome tinnitus is often a complex neurological condition with multiple contributing factors. Meaningful improvement frequently requires a coordinated, multimodal approach rather than a single treatment.

Our program combines:

• Medical management
• Prescription and nutraceutical therapy
• Customized sound therapy
• Tinnitus-specific CBT strategies
• Sleep optimization
• Lifestyle and dietary interventions
• Ongoing clinical support

Rather than focusing on tinnitus as an isolated ear problem, we focus on identifying and addressing the neurological processes that may be contributing to tinnitus severity, reactivity, and distress.

Absolutely.

While the Tinnitus Severity Assessment™ helps many patients better understand what may be driving their tinnitus, it is not required.

Finding Minnesota Tinnitus Specialists

Minnesota is home to major academic medical centers, including Mayo Clinic in Rochester and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, but access to a tinnitus specialist is still concentrated in a few parts of the state. For patients outside Rochester and the Twin Cities, finding a neurotologist or otologist with specific tinnitus expertise can be much more difficult.

Where Can You Find a Tinnitus Specialist in Minnesota?

Most subspecialty tinnitus care in Minnesota is concentrated at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and within the University of Minnesota Health system in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Patients in Duluth, St. Cloud, Mankato, Bemidji, Brainerd, and many rural communities may have access to strong general ENT and audiology care, but far fewer options for specialized tinnitus evaluation and management.

Why Can It Be Difficult to Access Tinnitus Specialty Care in Minnesota?

Minnesota’s major academic medical centers make specialty care appear widely available, but most neurotology and otology resources are concentrated around Rochester and the Twin Cities.

For patients elsewhere in the state, reaching a tinnitus specialist may involve lengthy referral pathways, significant travel, and waits for appointments at major academic centers.

Why Can Wait Times Be Long for Tinnitus Care in Minnesota?

Mayo Clinic serves patients from across the United States and around the world, while the University of Minnesota draws referrals from across the region. That demand can make accessing subspecialty care more difficult, particularly for patients who must travel to Rochester or Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Why Are Minnesota Patients Turning to Telehealth for Tinnitus Care?

Telehealth gives Minnesota patients another way to access specialty tinnitus care without repeatedly traveling to one of the state’s major medical hubs.

For patients in Duluth, St. Cloud, Mankato, Bemidji, Brainerd, and smaller communities across northern and southern Minnesota, virtual care can reduce some of the travel and scheduling barriers associated with in-person subspecialty care.

Does NeuroMed Serve Patients Throughout Minnesota?

Yes. NeuroMed provides telehealth tinnitus care throughout Minnesota, including Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, Duluth, St. Cloud, Mankato, Bemidji, Brainerd, and surrounding communities.

For Minnesota patients who have struggled to find a local tinnitus specialist, telehealth provides a more accessible way to receive specialized evaluation, education, and ongoing tinnitus management from home.
